Quick answer

Enter an original price and a discount percentage, and the tool shows the final price and the amount you save. So 25% off a price of 2,000 saves 500 and brings it to 1,500. It applies a single discount and doesn't add tax or fees. The figures update as you type, and the sums are done on your device.

What the Discount Calculator does

The tool turns a percentage off into money: how much you save and what you actually pay. Enter the original price and the discount, and it does the arithmetic that's easy to get wrong in your head, especially with awkward percentages.

Use it to check a sale claim, compare two offers or budget for a purchase, so you know the real price before you reach the till.

How it works

The tool multiplies the original price by the discount percentage to get the saving, then subtracts the saving from the price to get the final amount. Both results update as soon as you change either input.

The percentage is always taken from the original price, so a 25% discount means you keep paying 75% of the price and save the other 25%.

Methodology

  1. Read price and discount. Take the original price and the discount percentage you enter.
  2. Calculate the saving. Multiply the price by the discount percentage to find how much comes off.
  3. Find the final price. Subtract the saving from the original price.
  4. Show both figures. Display the amount saved and the final price you pay.

Discount calculation

saving = price × discount% ÷ 100 final price = price − saving
Worked example
price 2,000, discount 25% → saving 500 · final price 1,500

The discount is taken from the original price. A 25% discount means you pay 75% of the price. It applies one discount only and does not add tax or shipping.

Assumptions

  • A single discount is applied to the original price. For a second discount on top, apply it to the already-reduced price rather than adding the percentages together.
  • The result is before any sales tax, shipping or other charges, which are added separately at checkout.
  • The percentage is taken from the original price you enter, so make sure that price is the pre-discount amount.

Standards and references

  • Percentage of a price: A discount is a percentage of the original price. Multiplying the price by the percentage gives the saving, and what's left is what you pay.
  • Stacked discounts are multiplicative: Two discounts don't add up. An extra 10% off a price already cut by 20% is 10% off the reduced price, which leaves 72% of the original rather than 70%.
  • Discount versus tax: A discount lowers the price and tax is added afterward. This tool gives the discounted price before tax, so the amount you pay may be higher once tax applies.

Accuracy and limits

The saving and final price are worked out exactly from the price and percentage you enter, so for a single discount the figures are precise.

It applies one discount at a time. For stacked offers, such as an extra percentage off an already reduced price, run it twice and apply the second discount to the first result, because percentages don't simply add.

Tax, shipping and other fees aren't included. The final price shown is before those charges, so the amount you actually pay may be higher.

It treats the price you enter as the original, pre-discount price. Enter an already reduced price and the saving is worked out from that figure, not from the full original.

Real-world uses

Checking a sale price

See the real price after a percentage off.

Comparing offers

Work out which discount saves more in money terms.

Budgeting a purchase

Know the final price before you buy.

Verifying a claim

Confirm an advertised saving is what it says.

When it fits, and when it doesn't

Good for

  • Finding a sale price and the saving
  • A single percentage discount
  • Comparing the value of two offers
  • Quick budgeting before a purchase

Not the best choice for

  • Stacked or multiple discounts at once
  • Adding sales tax to the result
  • Buy-one-get-one or tiered deals
  • Discounts on an already-reduced price (without re-running)

For stacked discounts, apply each one in turn to the previous result. To include tax, add it to the discounted price afterward. For complex deals like buy-one-get-one, work out the effective discount separately.

Frequently asked questions

How is the discount calculated?
The original price is multiplied by the discount percentage to find the saving, and the saving is subtracted from the price to give the final amount. So 25% off 2,000 saves 500 and leaves 1,500.
Can I apply two discounts at once?
Not in a single step, because percentages don't add. For an extra discount on a reduced price, run the calculation again with the first result as the new price. Two 10% discounts aren't the same as 20% off.
Does it include tax?
No. The final price is the discounted price before any sales tax or fees. Tax is added afterward, so the amount you actually pay may be higher.
What does a 25% discount really mean?
You pay 75% of the original price and save the other 25%. On a price of 2,000, that is 1,500 to pay and 500 saved.
Why do two stacked discounts not equal their sum?
Because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original. A 20% then 10% discount leaves 72% of the original (a 28% saving), not 70%.
Can I use it for any currency?
Yes. The calculation is just percentages and arithmetic, so the currency symbol makes no difference.
What if I enter an already-discounted price?
The tool will calculate the saving from whatever price you enter. For the true saving, start from the original pre-discount price; otherwise you are discounting an already-reduced figure.
How do I find the percentage off from two prices?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. This tool works the other way, from a percentage to a price, but the reverse is a quick sum.
Does it handle decimal discounts like 12.5%?
Yes. You can enter fractional percentages, and the saving and final price are calculated precisely.
Is the final price rounded?
The figures are shown to the usual two decimal places for money. The underlying calculation is exact, so any rounding is only in the display.
Is my data uploaded?
No. The prices and percentages you type stay in your browser, which does the calculation itself.
Can it show the saving as a percentage too?
The saving percentage is simply the discount you entered. The tool shows the saving in money and the final price, which are the figures most people need at the till.

References

One percentage discount comes off the original price, giving the final price and the amount saved. Stacked offers need a second run, and tax isn't added.
