Quick answer

Upload a PDF, pick 90, 180 or 270 degrees, and the tool turns every page by that amount and gives you the corrected file to download. The rotation is stored as a page attribute, so it is lossless: the page isn't redrawn, only its display angle changes. The turn adds to any rotation the page already had. Your browser does the work, so the PDF never leaves your computer.

What the Rotate PDF does

This tool fixes the orientation of a PDF. If pages were scanned sideways or upside down, choose a quarter-turn (90, 180 or 270 degrees) and every page turns so the document reads the right way up.

Use it when a PDF opens in the wrong orientation. All the pages turn in one step and you get a corrected copy.

How it works

Each PDF page carries a rotation value, an angle of 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees that tells the viewer how to display it. The tool reads that value for every page, adds your chosen turn, writes the new angle back and saves the file.

Because only the rotation attribute changes, nothing is lost: the text and images are untouched and the file simply displays at the new angle. The turn applies to all pages and adds to any rotation already set.

Turns go clockwise, as PDF viewers apply them.

Processing pipeline

  1. Load the PDF. Read the uploaded PDF and its pages in the browser.
  2. Choose the angle. Pick a quarter-turn: 90, 180 or 270 degrees.
  3. Add the rotation. For each page, add your turn to its current rotation, keeping the result a multiple of 90.
  4. Save the file. Write the new rotation and download the corrected PDF.

How it rotates

each page's new rotation = (its current rotation + your turn) modulo 360 allowed turns: 90 · 180 · 270 (the page rotation is always a multiple of 90)
Worked example
a page already at 0° + a 90° turn → 90° (every page in the file turns the same amount)

Rotation is stored as a page attribute, so the page isn't redrawn and nothing is lost. The turn applies to every page; you can't pick individual pages.

The turn adds up

0° + 90° = 90°90° + 90° = 180°270° + 180° = 90°(450 − 360)
new angle = (current + turn) mod 360. Apply 90° twice and you get 180°.

Privacy

The PDF stays on your device. Your browser reads it, updates each page's rotation and builds the new file locally, with no upload and no copy kept anywhere.

There is no account, and the page saves nothing. Refresh or close the tab and both the original and the rotated file are cleared from memory, which makes it fine for statements, contracts and other private documents.

Standards and references

  • Page rotation attribute: Every PDF page has a rotation entry, an integer that must be a multiple of 90 (0, 90, 180 or 270). The viewer turns the page by that amount when it displays it. This is the entry the tool changes.
  • Lossless: Setting the rotation attribute doesn't redraw or recompress the page. Text and images are untouched, so quality stays the same and only the display angle changes.
  • Cumulative, in steps of 90: The new angle is the old one plus your turn, kept to a multiple of 90. Rotating a page that is already turned adds to its existing rotation rather than replacing it.

Accuracy and limits

Each page's display angle changes by exactly the amount you choose, while the page content stays pixel-for-pixel the same. Nothing is redrawn or recompressed.

Every page turns by the same amount. If only some pages are sideways, this tool will still rotate the whole document, so a mix of orientations needs a tool with per-page rotation.

Only quarter-turns are available: 90, 180 and 270 degrees. PDF page rotation is always a multiple of 90, so an angle like 45 degrees would mean redrawing the page, which this tool doesn't do.

The turn adds up. Rotating a page that already has a rotation adds to it, so applying 90 degrees twice gives 180. If a page looks unchanged, it may have had an existing rotation that your turn combined with.

Real-world uses

Fixing a sideways scan

Turn pages scanned in landscape back upright.

Correcting an upside-down PDF

Flip pages 180 degrees so they read normally.

Preparing for print

Set the right orientation before printing.

Tidying a shared document

Save a correctly oriented copy to send on.

When it fits, and when it doesn't

Good for

  • Rotating all pages the same amount
  • Fixing a sideways or upside-down scan
  • An orientation fix that keeps the page content untouched
  • Saving a corrected copy

Not the best choice for

  • Rotating only some pages
  • Arbitrary angles like 45 degrees
  • Straightening a slightly skewed scan
  • Cropping or redrawing pages

To rotate only certain pages, use a PDF editor with per-page rotation. A scan tilted by a few degrees needs a deskew tool, which redraws the page. This tool turns every page by a quarter-turn and leaves the content alone.

Frequently asked questions

How much can I rotate the PDF?
By a quarter-turn: 90, 180 or 270 degrees. PDF page rotation is always a multiple of 90, so those are the options. Choose 90 or 270 for a sideways scan, or 180 to flip an upside-down one.
Does rotating reduce the quality?
No. The rotation is stored as a page attribute, so the page isn't redrawn or recompressed. Text and images stay exactly as they were; only the display angle changes.
Can I rotate just one page?
No. This tool turns every page by the same amount. If only some pages are sideways, you need a PDF editor that supports per-page rotation.
Why does my page look the same after rotating?
The turn adds to any rotation the page already had. If your turn combined with an existing one, the page can land back where it started. Try a different angle to see the effect.
Can I rotate by 45 degrees or another angle?
No. PDF page rotation must be a multiple of 90, so only 90, 180 and 270 are possible. Any other angle would mean redrawing the page, which this tool doesn't do.
Does it keep my text selectable?
Yes. Because nothing is redrawn, the text layer is preserved. The rotated PDF still has selectable, searchable text, shown at the new angle.
What does cumulative rotation mean?
The new angle is the page's current rotation plus your turn. Rotating a page by 90 degrees twice gives 180 degrees instead of resetting each time.
Will it fix a scan that is only slightly tilted?
No. A tilt of a few degrees isn't a 90-degree rotation, and straightening it means redrawing the page. This tool only applies quarter-turns, so it can't deskew a crooked scan.
Is the file uploaded to a server?
No. A PDF library running in your browser does the rotation, so the file is never uploaded and no copy is kept anywhere.
Does it change the page size?
The page dimensions stay the same; only the rotation flag changes. A viewer shows a portrait page rotated 90 degrees as landscape, but the underlying page box is unchanged.
Can I undo the rotation?
Yes, by rotating back the other way: 270 degrees undoes a 90-degree turn, and 180 undoes 180. The turns add up to a full circle and return the page to where it started.
Which way does 90 degrees turn the page?
90 degrees turns the page clockwise, and 270 turns it the other way. If 90 gives the wrong orientation, use 270 instead.

References

The tool sets each page's rotation attribute instead of redrawing the page, so the content comes through unchanged and only the display angle moves.
