It reads the modern .docx format, not the older .doc. If you have a legacy .doc file, open it in Word or a compatible editor, save it as .docx, then extract the text.

Tables and other layouts are flattened. The text inside table cells comes through, but the grid does not, so a complex table becomes a run of text rather than aligned columns.
