Loading Text to Speech…

Your browser is preparing the tool. It runs 100% locally.

Quick answer

Paste text, pick a voice and speed, and your browser reads it aloud through your speakers. The voices come from your own device and browser, so the list and the quality differ between computers and phones. Speech plays live, with no audio file to download, and you can stop it at any time. The tool itself runs in your browser.

What the Text to Speech does

Enter some text, choose one of the voices your device provides, set the reading speed and press speak. Listening helps you proofread by ear, rest your eyes or hear how a piece of writing sounds.

Your operating system and browser supply the voices and languages, so the choice depends on your device. A stop button ends playback whenever you want.

How it works

The tool passes your text, the chosen voice and the speed to your browser's built-in speech feature. The browser then has your device's speech engine read the words through the speakers. Nothing is recorded, and the audio plays once.

Because the voices belong to your operating system and browser, the same text can sound different on a phone, a laptop or another browser. Some voices work fully offline, and a few higher-quality ones may need an internet connection.

Generation algorithm

  1. Read the text and settings. Take your text, the chosen voice and the reading speed.
  2. Hand it to the browser. Pass the text to the browser's built-in speech feature with the voice and speed.
  3. Speak through the device. The device's speech engine reads the words aloud through the speakers.
  4. Play live. The speech plays once and a stop button halts it. No audio file is created.

Privacy

Your device's own speech engine reads the text. With the offline voices built into your system, the text stays on your device and isn't uploaded.

A few higher-quality voices are supplied over the internet by the browser or operating system, so the text could be sent to that service to be spoken. For sensitive text, choose a voice marked as offline or don't read it aloud here.

Accuracy and limits

The voices and languages come from your device and browser, so your options differ from someone else's. A voice on one computer may be missing on another, and quality ranges from robotic to very natural depending on the system.

Speech plays live and no file is produced. The tool can't save the speech as audio, so capturing it needs separate recording software.

Most voices work offline, but some of the most natural ones come over the internet. If a voice needs a connection, your text may be sent to that service for synthesis, which matters for sensitive text.

Pronunciation isn't perfect. Unusual names, abbreviations, numbers and symbols can come out oddly, and different voices may read the same spelling differently. Rephrasing or adding punctuation can help.

The voice list can take a moment to appear, because some browsers load their voices after the page opens. If the menu is empty, wait a second or reopen it.

Real-world uses

Proofreading by ear

Hear your writing read aloud to catch awkward phrasing and typos.

Resting your eyes

Listen to an article or notes instead of reading on screen.

Accessibility and learning

Hear text spoken, which helps some readers and language learners.

Pronunciation check

Hear how a passage or name sounds in a chosen voice.

When it fits, and when it doesn't

Good for

  • Hearing text read aloud in the browser
  • Proofreading writing by ear
  • Listening instead of reading
  • A quick spoken pronunciation

Not the best choice for

  • Saving the speech as an audio file
  • Studio-quality or custom cloned voices
  • Guaranteed identical voices across devices
  • Reading highly sensitive text via cloud voices

For a downloadable audio file or premium voices, use a text-to-speech service that exports audio. If your device's built-in voices sound poor, install better system voices and this tool will list them.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my voices different from someone else's?
Your operating system and browser supply the voices, not this tool. The list, the languages and the quality depend on your device, so another computer or phone may show something different.
Can I download the speech as an audio file?
No. The browser's speech feature plays the audio live through your speakers and offers no way to save it. You would need separate recording software to capture it.
Does it work offline?
Mostly, yes. The voices built into your system work without a connection. A few higher-quality voices are delivered over the internet and need one.
Is my text private?
With the offline voices on your device, yes, because nothing is uploaded. Some natural-sounding voices are provided online, though, and they can send your text to that service. Use an offline voice for sensitive text.
Why does a name or number sound wrong?
Speech engines guess at pronunciation and can trip on unusual names, abbreviations, numbers and symbols. Rephrasing, spelling the word out or adding punctuation often helps.
Can I change the speed?
Yes. The speed control slows the voice down or speeds it up, from roughly half to double the normal rate.
Why is the voice list empty?
Some browsers load their voices a moment after the page opens. Wait a second or reopen the menu and the voices should appear.
Can I change the pitch?
No, only the voice and the speed. Pitch depends on the voice you pick.
Which languages are supported?
The languages your device's voices cover. Many systems include several, and if you install more system voices, this tool will offer them.
Why does it stop or cut off?
Very long text can hit a browser limit on a single spoken passage. Break long text into shorter parts, or press speak again to continue.
Does it record me or use my microphone?
No. The tool reads text aloud and never listens or uses your microphone. It only passes text to the speech engine.
Is anything uploaded?
Not with local voices, because everything happens on your device. Only an online voice, if you pick one, sends the text to a speech service.

References

Speech comes from the browser's built-in Web Speech feature and your device's own voices, so the voice list and quality vary by device. Audio plays live with nothing to download. Local voices keep the text on your device, but some higher-quality online voices may send it to a service.
